Magnesium Sulphate in Hydroponic Nutrient Solutions
Magnesium in a Soilless System
magnesium sulphate hydroponics is one of the simplest ways to supply magnesium and sulfur in a soilless crop, because the material dissolves cleanly and introduces no chloride. In a system with no soil reserve, any shortfall shows up in the leaf within days.
MgSO4 Group Limited recommends treating magnesium as a defined part of the nutrient recipe rather than an occasional corrective additive.
Building a Hydroponic Nutrient Solution
A hydroponic nutrient solution is a balance of competing ions, so adding magnesium changes the ratio against calcium and potassium. Formulate the magnesium target alongside the calcium target, then check the combined electrical conductivity before it reaches the crop.
Prepare a concentrated stock solution separately from calcium nitrate, since concentrated calcium and sulphate together can precipitate as gypsum and block the dosing line.
Dosing MgSO4 for Hydroponics
For MgSO4 for hydroponics, dissolve the required mass completely in warm water, allow it to cool, then add to the working tank with circulation running. Typical final concentrations sit in the 25-50 mg/L magnesium range, adjusted to crop and growth stage.
Always confirm the rate against a water analysis of your source water, which may already contribute a meaningful amount of magnesium.

Selecting Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate
Use a high-purity magnesium sulfate heptahydrate with declared assay and low heavy-metal content for recirculating systems. Impurities accumulate in a closed loop rather than being flushed away, so feed-grade or high-purity crystal grades are preferable.
Fine crystal or powder dissolves fastest, but filter the stock through a fine mesh before dosing to keep insoluble particles out of the emitters.
A Reliable Soluble Magnesium Source
A soluble magnesium source must leave no residue in the stock tank and must not shift pH unexpectedly. Magnesium sulphate is close to neutral in solution, which makes it easier to hold a stable root-zone pH than several alternative salts.
Record the batch and dissolution behaviour for each new lot, since a change in crystal size affects how fast the stock reaches full clarity.
Managing Nutrient Solution EC
Track nutrient solution EC before and after any magnesium addition, because the sulphate ion contributes to the total dissolved salts. A rising EC with unchanged crop uptake often indicates that top-up water and nutrient dosing are out of balance.
In recirculating systems, schedule a partial solution replacement on a fixed cycle rather than only correcting EC with fresh concentrate.
Common Mistakes in Dosing
The most frequent error is mixing concentrated calcium and sulphate stocks in the same vessel, which produces a visible precipitate and a blocked filter. The second is correcting visible chlorosis with a large single dose instead of adjusting the recipe.
Keep separate A and B stock tanks, label them clearly, and never combine concentrates before dilution.
Monitoring Crop Response
Interveinal chlorosis on older leaves indicates magnesium is short; check leaf tissue and the solution analysis together before changing the formula. New growth recovers over the following week, while older damaged leaves rarely re-green fully.
Log EC, pH and temperature daily during a formulation change so any drift can be linked to a specific adjustment.
