Potato Magnesium Deficiency: Diagnosis and Correction

Oct 21,2026

Recognising Potato Magnesium Deficiency

potato magnesium deficiency shows as pale mottling between the veins of older lower leaves, sometimes with a distinct yellow margin while the veins stay green. Under a heavy tuber bulking load the symptom can spread quickly up the canopy.

It is often mistaken for early senescence or nitrogen shortage, which leads to extra N application and a wider nutrient imbalance rather than a correction.

Why Potatoes Draw Magnesium Hard

A potato crop produces a large dry-matter sink in a short window, and magnesium is central to chlorophyll, photosynthesis and carbohydrate transport to the tuber. Sandy, acidic or high-potassium soils make the shortfall more likely.

Where irrigation water is low in magnesium and NPK programmes are intensive, the reserve is depleted season after season.

Magnesium Sulphate for Potatoes

magnesium sulphate for potatoes supplies magnesium and sulfur together and is low in chloride, which suits a chloride-sensitive tuber crop. It can be applied basally as a granular grade or dissolved for fertigation.

For a basal programme, incorporate before planting so the nutrient sits in the root zone during tuber initiation rather than arriving after bulking has begun.

MgSO4 for Crops Programme Design

A sound MgSO4 for crops plan starts with a soil and petiole test, sets magnesium as a fixed part of the pre-plant formula, and reserves a foliar option for in-season correction. This is more reliable than reacting to visible symptoms.

Record the treated and untreated rows separately so the effect on tuber size distribution and specific gravity can be measured at harvest.

Understanding Interveinal Chlorosis

interveinal chlorosis is not unique to magnesium, so confirm with tissue analysis before treating. Iron deficiency appears on young growth first, whereas magnesium appears on older leaves because the nutrient is mobile within the plant.

The position of the symptom on the plant is the fastest field-level clue and prevents a wasted application.

Magnesium Sulfate Fertilizer Rates

A typical magnesium sulfate fertilizer basal rate falls in the 15-30 kg per hectare range for MgSO4, adjusted to soil test, cultivar and yield target. Foliar correction is usually a 1-2% solution repeated at 10-14 day intervals.

Split the dose on light soils to reduce leaching risk, and avoid placing concentrated soluble material in direct contact with seed tubers.

Soil Magnesium Test Interpretation

A soil magnesium test should be read together with exchangeable potassium and calcium, since the Mg:K ratio governs uptake as much as the absolute magnesium level. High potash programmes commonly induce magnesium shortfall even on apparently adequate soils.

Sample at a consistent depth and time of season so year-to-year results are comparable and the trend is visible.

Checking the Response

Expect improved canopy colour within two weeks of a foliar correction, but evaluate the programme on tuber yield, size profile and dry matter at harvest. Magnesium affects assimilate transport, so the benefit is often in grading rather than in total tonnage alone.

Where the response is weak, revisit potassium rate, soil pH and irrigation water before increasing the magnesium dose again.
