Storage and Caking Control for MgSO4 Heptahydrate

Why Heptahydrate Cakes in Storage

Magnesium sulphate caking is usually a moisture and pressure problem rather than a purity problem. Heptahydrate contains a high share of water of crystallisation, and a warm-humid-cool cycle causes partial surface dissolution followed by recrystallisation between adjacent crystals.

The bridges formed in that cycle harden under the weight of stacked bags. MgSO4 Group Limited sees most complaints after a long sea voyage or a warehouse without humidity control, not immediately after production.

MgSO4 Heptahydrate Storage Conditions

Good MgSO4 heptahydrate storage means a cool, dry, shaded area with a stable temperature, pallets off the floor and no direct contact with an external wall. Avoid storing beside steam lines, boilers or freshly produced warm material.

Keep the original liner sealed until use and reseal partly used bags immediately. A single open bag in a humid room can raise the local moisture enough to affect the whole pallet.

Heptahydrate Crystal Storage by Particle Band

Heptahydrate crystal storage behaviour differs by size. Fine crystal powder has more contact points and cakes faster, while a 1-3mm or 2-4mm crystal stays free-flowing longer under the same conditions.

If your process tolerates a coarser band, choosing it is a cheap form of insurance. Where a fine grade is required, tighten the humidity and rotation discipline instead of accepting caking as normal.

Humidity Control in Practice

Effective humidity control magnesium sulphate storage does not always need full air conditioning. Desiccant units, sealed bay curtains, a vapour barrier under the pallet and a simple hygrometer with a daily log resolve most warehouse cases.

Pay attention to condensation when a container is opened after a cold voyage. Let the pallets acclimatise before removing the liner, otherwise warm moist air condenses directly onto cold crystal surfaces.

Bulk Bag Storage and Stacking

For bulk bag storage, limit stack height, keep pallets level and avoid overhanging loads that concentrate pressure on the lower bags. Use a first-in-first-out layout with clear lot labels on two faces of every pallet.

Where bags are stacked two high, place a rigid board between layers to spread the load. Rotation discipline matters as much as humidity: older stock at the back of a bay is where caking is nearly always found.

Working With a Magnesium Sulfate Supplier

A competent magnesium sulfate supplier should state the free-moisture limit, the particle band and the packing construction in the specification annex, and should provide a per-lot COA and a retained reference sample.

Ask about anti-caking practice, inner liner thickness and pallet wrapping before placing a winter order. These details determine arrival condition far more than a small difference in assay.

Stock Rotation and Shelf Discipline

Assign each delivery a lot number and an arrival date, and set a review point at three months. If a lot is still in store at that point, inspect a bottom-layer bag and record its flow behaviour.

Keep consumption records linked to lot numbers. If a caking issue appears, that link lets you identify whether it is one production lot or a storage-zone problem within a single day.

Recovering a Caked Lot Safely

A lightly caked bag can often be restored by gentle mechanical loosening on the pallet before discharging. Do not hammer the material or apply heat, which drives further surface dissolution and recrystallisation.

Where hardening is severe, re-screen the material and check the assay before use in a dosing system. Never force a compacted lump into a stock tank designed for free-flowing crystal.

Practical Storage Checklist

Before arrival: confirm the liner, pallet wrap and stacking plan with the supplier. On arrival: acclimatise, log the warehouse humidity and label every pallet. In storage: rotate monthly and keep the liner sealed.
