Winter Greenhouse Demand Lifts Magnesium Sulphate Orders

Nov 11,2026

A Seasonal Pattern Buyers Should Read Early

As northern hemisphere growers close field programmes and move production under cover, winter greenhouse magnesium sulphate enquiries rise well before the coldest weeks arrive. MgSO4 Group Limited sees this shift in late October and November every year, when protected-culture operators rebuild their nutrient recipes for lower light and higher cropping intensity.

The pattern matters to importers because greenhouse programmes run continuously. Unlike a single field application, a winter fertigation schedule consumes magnesium every week, which turns a one-off order into a standing call-off requirement.

Why MgSO4 Greenhouse Demand Rises

Under glass, MgSO4 greenhouse demand is driven by fast crop cycles and the absence of rainfall-driven soil buffering. Tomato, pepper, cucumber and leafy crops remove magnesium steadily, and a protected root zone has a limited reserve to draw on.

Lower winter light also reduces photosynthetic efficiency, so growers become less tolerant of a marginal magnesium status. Corrective dosing is cheaper than lost fruit quality, and most greenhouse nutrition plans now include a soluble magnesium source as a standing line item.

Grade Selection for Protected Cultivation

Selecting magnesium sulfate for greenhouse use starts with solubility, not purity alone. Fully soluble heptahydrate crystal or fine powder dissolves cleanly in a stock tank, while coarse granular material is better suited to soil incorporation before planting.

Ask for a stated dissolution behaviour at your stock-tank temperature, a low insoluble fraction and a per-lot certificate of analysis. A grade that leaves residue in the filter is a daily operating cost, even if the bag price looks attractive.

Winter Fertilizer Orders and Timing

Winter fertilizer orders should be placed against a shipment calendar rather than against a stock-out. November and December bring inspection queues, holiday production breaks and tighter container availability on several Asia outbound lanes.

We recommend confirming a November call-off and a January call-off together, with the specification annex identical for both. That prevents a mid-season grade change, which is the most common cause of dosing complaints in greenhouse programmes.

The Role of a Soluble Magnesium Source

A dependable soluble magnesium source lets a grower hold the Mg target in the nutrient solution without pushing sulphate or electrical conductivity beyond the crop plan. Magnesium sulphate supplies both magnesium and sulphur in a predictable ratio, which simplifies recipe balancing.

Where a separate sulphur source is already present, calculate the combined sulphate load before increasing the dose. Where potassium or calcium levels are high, review the antagonism with magnesium uptake rather than simply adding more MgSO4.

Selecting a Magnesium Sulphate Supplier

A reliable magnesium sulphate supplier for protected cultivation should be judged on lot-to-lot consistency and documentation, not only on price. Require a per-lot COA, stated heavy-metal ceilings appropriate to food-crop production, and a retained reference sample.

Since 2007 our own plant has controlled crystallisation and packing directly, which keeps particle size and free moisture stable between shipments. That consistency is what allows a greenhouse to keep one dosing programme across an entire winter.

Packing and Documentation for Winter Shipments

Specify packing that survives cold, humid transit: an inner liner, a sound outer bag and palletisation that resists condensation inside the container. Moisture pickup during a long winter voyage is a more frequent complaint than assay variation.

List the certificate of origin, packing list, bill of lading and lot-specific COA in the contract document set. Where destination authorities require a phytosanitary or conformity statement, agree the wording before the vessel is booked.

What Distributors Should Confirm Now

Distributors supplying greenhouse clusters should confirm three things for the winter: the grade and particle band, the monthly volume split, and the latest acceptable arrival date at the grower. All three are easier to fix in November than in January.

It is also worth checking whether the grower uses a shared stock tank with calcium nitrate. Compatibility planning at this stage avoids precipitation issues that otherwise appear as blocked emitters mid-season.

Our November Recommendation

MgSO4 Group Limited recommends locking a soluble grade, a two-month call-off schedule and a fixed specification annex now, then reviewing volume once at the turn of the year. This protects continuity without forcing a guess on January pricing.

Share your crop, stock-tank temperature and monthly tonnage, and our team will return a grade-matched proposal with a documented lead time and a per-lot COA.
